Joanna Toole Memorial Bench Design
for Adrian Toole and the Joanna Toole Foundation
I designed a Corten steel panel of for the memorial bench for Joanna Toole. Joanna used to run regularly along the banks of the Exe estuary on the Exe trail where this bench is situated, the first on the trail if you leave from Exmouth. The bench and verticals already existed. We just added the backing which enhances the original without loss. The panel relects Joanna’s life’s work working to protect ocean creatures from man-made pollution, in particular discarded fishing gear. It is designed to be ‘representational’ as opposed to symbolic and depicts a rising wave below which are a shoal of fish. This work took her all over the world advocating to governments and local fishing communities. I like the way the fish in groups make interesting shapes together and the sense of motion. The panel also has text about Joanna and her life cut out of the steel. Corten steel initially rusts to a lovely rust orange and then ceases to decay and remains robust for many years in the same appearance. I delivered the design to metalworker Anthony Doble who prepared it for cutting out and who then installed it on site.
Joanna died in the tragic Boeing air crash in Ethiopia along with colleagues travelling for work. Her father Adrian lives in Exmouth.
